Senior / Principal Ecologist

Devon

Job Type

Full-time / Part-time

Workspace

WFH / Office / Hybrid

About the Role

Devon-based Ecologists! Are you:

> Dreading another summer of burnout with endless night surveys, and back-to-back dusk/dawn work?

> Feeling isolated, lost in bureaucracy, or disconnected in a large organisation?

> Tired of corporate culture, or feeling your role is more about serving development than protecting wildlife?

> Not getting the flexibility you need - for childcare, health, personal development, or just life?

> Or simply craving a change of scenery and a supportive, down-to-earth team?

We're working with a wonderful independent consultancy looking for Senior team members to become part of their fantastic team in Okehampton!

Here's why you'll want to join them:

Healthy working practices - a clear TOIL policy, a strict cap on night work (max 1 per week for Consultants, less for Seniors & Principals), and flexible start/finish times. Part-time and compressed hours welcome too!

Real connection - Mondays are in-office days for the whole team - great for collaboration and a proper team vibe. The rest of the week? Office or WFH, it’s your call.

The workspace - Modern, spacious, dog-friendly office that's easy to get to in Okehampton, Devon

Local focus and purpose led - A great mix of projects working predominantly within Devon and Cornwall (with a little Dorset and Somerset mixed in), and a team that cares deeply about conservation, not just compliance

Personalised progression - Growth and development that's tailored to you, not a one-size-fits-all approach

What we're looking for:

To apply for this role, you'll need:

  • Degree-level qualification in a relevant subject and CIEEM membership

  • At least 4 years of UK ecological consultancy experience

  • Experience with UKHab, BNG Assessments, protected species surveys & mitigation

  • Strong client liaison and communication skills

  • Driver with access to your own transport

  • Eligible to live and and work in the UK

The following skills and experience would also be highly advantageous:

  • Protected species licences and/or FISC Level 4 (or equivalent botany skills)

  • Experience mentoring/managing junior staff

  • HRA assessment experience
